Its name comes from the Latin word ostium, meaning “mouth,” referring to its location near the mouth of the Tiber River and the sea.
According to ancient tradition, Ostia was founded around 620 BC by Ancus Marcius, the fourth king of Rome, to control the nearby salt pans. The earliest archaeological remains discovered so far date to the second half of the 4th century BC, when a fortified settlement, or castrum, was established.
